The Most Affordable .380 on The Market: YC380

The Hi-Point YC380 is a .380 ACP semi-automatic handgun that has garnered attention for its affordability, reliability, and practical features. Yes, I know…there are those that will say it…it’s a Hi-Point. However, in my opinion there is a spot for every firearm made in my arsenal, especially those that go bang every time and you can purchase for $200. I want to  delve into various aspects of the YC380, including its design, features, performance, and overall value.

The Hi-Point of today may look similar to the Hi-Point of old, but more and more people are realizing the quality of these low-priced jewels. The Hi-Point YC380 maintains the robust and utilitarian design that Hi-Point Firearms is known for. The YC380 features a high-impact polymer frame and grips, which keeps costs down, but have proven to be reliable and resistance to wear and tear. The slide is crafted from a zinc-alloy material, and the entire firearm is finished with a black powder coat, ensuring resilience against the elements. All Hi-Point firearms have a lifetime warranty.

The pinky extension on the magazine provides for a full grip for those with large hands

The handgun measures 7.6 inches in overall length with the threaded barrel, and 7.0 inches with the non-threaded barrel. It weighs 34.2 ounces in the standard configuration and 33 ounces in the non-threaded configuration. These dimensions make the YC380 a relatively compact, as compared to the older model, but still not compared to the competition.  But, it is still a substantial firearm, suitable for both concealed carry and home defense. It is very very similar and made from the same frame as it’s big brother, the YC9.

A threaded barrel and a front rail are some added features to the newly constructed YC380

The YC380 is a fresh face of the old Hi-Point 380. The new version is equipped with a variety of features designed to enhance its functionality and user experience. Some of the key features include:

  1. Threaded Barrel: The standard model comes with a threaded barrel, allowing users to attach suppressors or other muzzle devices. This is a significant addition for those who require a more customizable firearm.
  2. +P Rated: The YC380 is rated for +P ammunition, meaning it can handle higher pressure rounds. This increases its versatility and stopping power.
  3. Adjustable Sights: The handgun comes with fully adjustable 3-dot sights, which are also compatible with Glock front sights. This allows for improved accuracy and personalization according to user preference.
  4. Red Dot Ready: The rear sights are designed to be compatible with red dot optics, providing users with modern sighting options.
  5. Safety Features: The YC380 includes a magazine disconnect safety, a manual safety, and a last round lock open feature.
  6. Accessory Rail: A standard accessory rail is included for mounting lights, lasers, or other tactical accessories.
  7. Lifetime Warranty: Hi-Point’s industry-leading lifetime warranty covers the YC380, offering free repairs for the life of the gun, regardless of ownership changes.

The newly improved slide serrations make racking the slide easy

The performance of the Hi-Point YC380 is where it truly stands out, particularly when considering its price point. The .380 ACP cartridge is known for its manageable recoil, making the YC380 an excellent choice for both novice and experienced shooters. The gun’s weight and grip design further mitigate recoil, ensuring stability and accuracy during rapid fire. The only drawbacks to the YC380 are its weight and size when trying to conceal carry; however, I do find that carrying the firearm in the OWB configuration is comfortable and easily manageable. I also feel the YC380 would make an excellent truck gun, or a valuable asset in the deer stand or in a chest rig for hiking. You tend to be not as concerned about the elements when the firearm is a budget friendly one.

One of the most notable feature changes to the YC380 is the backstrap safety

In terms of accuracy, the adjustable sights and compatibility with red dot optics allows for surprisingly accurate shooting at defense distances. The YC380’s reliability is a hallmark of Hi-Point firearms; it performs consistently well even under adverse conditions. The YC380 cycles smoothly and is dependable, which is crucial for a self-defense firearm.

YC380 is the perfect fit for the DeSantis YUKON hunting chest rig. I find it a great fit for the Outdoors.

The Hi-Point YC380’s most compelling attribute is its value. Priced at an MSRP of $215, it is one of the most affordable handguns on the market. This low cost does not come at the expense of performance or durability, making it an excellent entry-level firearm, or you can do like me, and put one in all the major rooms of my house for a fully-armed home.

The YC380 fits perfectly in large hands, and has minimal recoil making it great for beginning shooters

When compared to other handguns in the same caliber and price range, the YC380 holds its own. Its build quality, feature set, and lifetime warranty give it an edge over many competitors. While it may lack the refinement and brand prestige of higher-end models, it excels in offering practical, no-nonsense performance.

The Hi-Point YC380 is a standout option in the budget handgun market. It offers a blend of durability, reliability, and practical features that are rarely seen at its price point. Whether for personal defense, daily protection, or target shooting, the YC380 provides a solid performance that belies its low cost. The inclusion of features such as a threaded barrel, adjustable sights, and a robust warranty make it a formidable competitor in the .380 ACP category. For those seeking a dependable and affordable handgun, the Hi-Point YC380 is a compelling choice.
